Extra Mile: A Runhead Community Beer

Extra Mile, Session IPA 3.9%

Extra Mile is a limited edition 3.9% Session IPA in collaboration with local running club, Runhead AC, to raise funds for Westminster House Youth Club. Westminster House Youth Club provides purposeful activities, both recreational and educational for young people aged 8-18 and Runhead AC have raised over £4000 for the charity to date to help them support young people to make positive life choices. When Dan and Terry from Runhead AC got in touch with us with the opportunity to produce this special one-off beer for WHYC we jumped at the opportunity to work with such an important service in our community.

Extra Mile is a 3.9% Session IPA, packed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops for notes of grapefruit and orange pith for a clean and refreshing finish.

“Extra Mile captures the amazing lengths, Dan, Terry and all the team at both Brick and Runhead have gone to in making this special collaboration happen, but also the extra lengths the amazing team at WHYC go to every day to support young people in the area.”
– Thom Banks, Runhead AC member.

Developing a Runhead beer and supporting local causes has been a Runhead AC goal from the very start of the club in 2016 with two of Runhead’s founders Anthony Mathews and Leonie Hope saying: “4 years ago a group of friends met at a party and chatted about how we all loved running and we all loved beer and Runhead was born. Our aim was to bring together local runners at a free club where they could run with friends, socialise with a beer, and support the local community. This message really hit home in Nunhead and Peckham, and suddenly we were running, drinking beer, and raising money for charity with over 50 friends. Having a Runhead beer is a dream come true. And the fact that the beer is in collaboration with Brick Brewery, somewhere we ran from in the very early days, and Westminster House Youth Club, a charity we have a strong history of supporting makes it taste even sweeter. ”

Westminster House Youth Club is one of the oldest youth clubs in the country.  From the very early days in of the Boys Club in Napier Hall to the modern Youth Club they operate from today, the Club has always worked with young people amongst the most deprived and disadvantaged in the country. It provides purposeful activities, both recreational and educational for young people aged 8-18. The local area is beset by a range of inner city problems, e.g. drugs, gang violence, poor educational opportunities, etc. The Club aims to support young people to make positive life choices.

“At Westminster House Youth Club we are all so excited to be supported by Runhead and Brick Brewery. Their latest project, Extra Mile, is such a fabulous example of Social Action – a local community supporting its most vulnerable young members – whilst also having a great time! Long may this partnership continue!”
– Kate Worthington MBE, Westminster House Youth Club

Community is what drives us at Brick and you can’t get any more community-focussed than this partnership with Runhead AC and WHYC. The children are the future and this is a charity that we very much stand behind. We’ll welcome anyone into our neighbourhood Tap Room to try the beer and raise a glass to the good work of our surrounding communities.

The Extra Mile label design details a map of the local area where Runhead, Brick and WHYC are all based and where WHYC carry out a lot of their amazing work. On the back of the can, you will notice a QR code. Scanning it will direct you to a selection of videos about the project and those involved. Extra Mile will go on sale from Sunday March 1st at the Brick Brewery Tap Room in Peckham immediately after the Big Half, one of the major events in the UK Running Calendar. The Runhead AC team will be celebrating their achievement and cheersing to the good work of WHYC with some of the team from Brick and the youth club.

If you’re a bar, pub or bottle shop  to stock Extra Mile to sell and help us raise vital funds for WHYC please get in touch with sales@brickbrewery.co.uk

Hachet Sour, 6.0%

Hatchet Sour, 6.0%

The latest release in our Heritage Sour Series, Hatchet Sour is a 6.0% cherry and cherry wood saison.

This tart Saison has been bolstered with Rye and Munich malts to add a peppery-spiced complexity. The generous addition of sweet cherry into the fermenter gives the Saison a jammy sweetness which is balanced with the tannic and subtle vanilla notes from the cherry wood chips.

The cherry tree myth is the most well-known and longest enduring legend about George Washington. In the original story, when Washington was 6 years old he received a hatchet as a gift and damaged his father’s cherry tree. When his father discovered what he had done, he became angry and confronted him. Young George bravely said, “I cannot tell a lie…I did cut it with my hatchet.” Washington’s father embraced him and rejoiced that his son’s honesty was worth more than a thousand trees. However true this story really is, this Hatchet Sour is honest using real sweet cherries and aged on cherry wood, albeit not quite 1,000 trees.

Hatchet Sour is available in 330ml can and keg from next Monday 2nd March and will be pouring exclusively at our Taproom from this Friday 28th February.

Peckham Helles Joins Our Foundation Range

Peckham Helles, 4.2%

What a better way to start 2020 than with a new beer joining our Foundation Range; our core range of beers available all-year round, Peckham Helles is a 4.2% gluten-free Helles lager. Gluten-free because we think that good lager should be enjoyed by everyone. We’ve used the newly developed enzymes to remove unwanted gluten, Peckham Helles is classified as gluten reduced/free, without the use of non-traditional brewing grains such as sorghum or maize. Peckham Helles is an unadulterated classic Bavarian helles lager, knowing that the best lagers are simple lagers we use only German Pilsner malt for its delicate sweetness and straw gold appearance. This is combined with classic noble hop aroma from our favourite German varietal Hallertau Mittelfrüh. Fermented and conditioned slowly to develop a subdued floral yeast character and filtered for crystal clarity, Peckham Helles is designed simply for drinking, not thinking.

This Peckham Helles has a soft bitterness with light, fruity yeast esters and herbal spice. Refreshing and moreish with a clean and crisp finish. Available in 330ml cans and keg from this week!

6th Birthday Beers: Barrel-Aged Winter Berry Sours

Barrel-Aged Winter Berry Sours 2019

Last year for our 5th birthday we released Winter Berry Sour to commemorate a poignant year of Taproom renovation, settling into our bigger production site, growing as a team and continuing to execute our Sour Series we are being increasingly well known for. This Winter Berry Sour was an extra special release; a Flanders-red style with additions of dark fruits; sour cherries, elderberries, blackcurrants and blackberries post-fermentation with oak and cherry wood to create a vinous and complex blend of rich berry fruit, sweet vanilla and caramel malt notes. Thinking ahead to our 6th birthday we also put a portion of this beer into 2 barrels: Moscatel and Pinot Noir. The beers had a 12 month long kip and when they were tasting amazing, bottled them into 375ml bottles. They’re now ready for release just in time to celebrate our 6th birthday this weekend.

Moscatel Barrel-Aged Winter Berry Sour. A type of fortified wine made from Muscat grapes in Spain and Portugal, Moscatel wine is characterised by its light floral aromas with undertones of floral orange blossom, jasmine with a sweet honeyed and raisin palate. 12 months in the Moscatel barrel has imparted a subtle honey and floral sweetness to the Winter Berry Sour, finishing on a soft, vanilla richness.

Pinot Noir Barrel-Aged Winter Berry Sour. A red wine grape variety and the classic grape of Burgundy, Pinot Noir is well known for its heady aroma of red fruits and berries, French oak and pepper spice. 12 months in the Pinot Noir barrel has added further complexity with soft red berry tannins, rich oak spice and a vibrant acidity.

The stunning label designs were a collaboration between Peckham-based artist Katrina Russell-Adams and Elves Design Studio. Katrina is known for creating bold and bright abstract art, murals, textiles and installations. Katrina applied her style to this design through being inspired from various buildings and structures around Peckham, adding a provincial element to these special beers. Taking a screen-printing course 5 years ago kick started Katrina’s art and since then the hobby has grown into a career, boosting her confidence and creativity, brightening up any space her stunning work is found. Camberwell-based designer Tom Kellet runs design company Elves Design Studio which specialises in graphic design, furniture and set design. Tom helped bring Katrina’s label design to reality by transforming it into the graphic.

The design was originally created for last year’s 2018 Winter Berry Sour label, but the colour palette of these 2 new labels have been updated to represent the deep and rich ingredients and barrel-aging identities of each beer whilst retaining the link between 2018’s release and this year’s. We’ve also packaged it into a special 2-pack box making it the perfect gift for your beer-loving partner, friend or family member this festive season.

Get your hands on these as we launch them at the London Christmas Beer Festival at Canopy Market, King’s Cross from this Friday and our 6th Birthday Party this Saturday 7th December. We are holding 2 free tutored tasting of both beers at our birthday party this Saturday 7th December at 3pm and 5pm too! Both sessions are sold out for guaranteed seats, but drop in and we will try to accommodate as many people as possible! Join Pete and Ian as we taste both beers and pick their brains with any beery questions.
